Upcoming event on June 23 at 7 pm... Previous Morris Award Finalist Interview: Akemi Dawn Bowman and STARFISH! Next

Just wanted to post a few updates and events for 2018. First of all, I’m excited to be traveling to Santa Monica May 4 and 5 for YALLWEST. It’s such a fun event and I hope to see you there!

In writing news, the cover for (DON’T) CALL ME CRAZY is up and it is gorgeous! I’m thrilled to have an essay in this anthology. It’s about my experience with misophonia and how a lifetime of sound intolerance and intrusive thoughts have shaped my sense of self.

I’m also excited to be a part of the upcoming Poe-inspired anthology, HIS HIDEOUS HEART, edited by the fabulous Dahlia Adler. I’ll be tackling “The Tell-Tale Heart,” one of my all-time favorite short stories.

In other news, my family has made friends of late with an old scraggly cat who has been visiting us. We had taken to calling her Mrs. Kitty, but when we took her to the vet, we learned that she is a male cat named Orlando. Orlando is very old (16!) but enjoys visiting us and our neighbors–who all feed him. He’s a very sweet kitty.

Spring is here! Enjoy!

  1. Hi Steph!

I hadn’t heard of misophonia before and had to look it up. I understand how you feel about sound intolerances because I’ve battled sensory issues my entire life (the biggest being noises, and in particular, when I’m around too much talking and it completely overloads my brain.) I hope you’ve managed misophonia well!

I can’t wait for HIS HIDEOUS HEART! With so many retellings, I’m so glad there’s finally a book of reinterpretations of Poe’s works. And THE TELL-TALE HEART is my fave story of his! When I was a kid, I saw a play of this tale and it was what introduced me to my lifelong love of Poe. So I’m thrilled that’s the story you picked!

I’ve really enjoyed your pics of lovely old man Orlando. He must really enjoy visiting your family and I’m sure the kiddos like him a lot, too. One of my favorite things about old cats are how they always look grumpy even when they’re doing just fine. My oldest kitty (almost 12 yrs old!), though, is as grumpy as she looks in pics. If she could talk, I imagine she would sound like Clint Eastwood in GRAN TORINO, even though she can’t go onto the lawn because of her allergies. ;-)

    All my best,
    Lori

    1. Thank you, Lori!

I think finding a place of acceptance with misophonia has helped me more than anything! Also, I love all your photos of your animal friends. I can just imagine your kitty’s grumpy voice, ha. :) I hope you are doing well and I am still looking forward to the day that our paths cross in person. Thank you again for kind thoughts.

      Best,
      Steph

      1. I’m glad you enjoy pics of my animal friends. I have no shortage of them! Haha! I also look forward to the day we finally get to meet, chat, and you sign my cherished books written by you :-) You’re the best!
