It’s less than two months until the release of Delicate Monsters, and I’ve been so overwhelmed of late with other life obligations and impending events (graduation! a wedding! rabbit shows! the lunar eclipse! oh, so many Little League games!) that I haven’t had time to focus on what putting this book into the world means to me. In some ways, that’s a good thing, but I do hope to take the time to reflect before June 9th arrives.

But a few nice updates:

Delicate Monsters received starred reviews from both Publishers Weekly and Booklist, for which I’m both grateful and proud. Here are brief quotes from each:

“Award-winning Kuehn is firing on all cylinders in her latest taut psychological thriller. Like her previous YA novels, Kuehn’s latest benefits from tight construction, expert pacing, and voices that ring especially true for contemporary teenagers, particularly Sadie’s entrancing, gleefully acerbic tone. Intelligent, compulsively readable literary fiction with a dark twist.” —Booklist, starred review

“Kuehn (Complicit) once again proves herself a talented writer in a tough, punishing novel about the damages we inflict on others and the shaky defenses we build to mask trauma and guilt.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Switching gears (books), Complicit was nominated for the 2016 Kentucky Bluegrass Award, which is a very cool thing.

I also have a few events coming up. I’ll be updating my Events page, but here’s a bit of what’s planned:

May 9: YA Author Hoopla at Books Inc., Opera Plaza in San Francisco  4:00 pm
June 10: I will be at the University Book Store in Seattle with Camille DeAngelis, author of Bones & All 7:00pm
June 13: Delicate Monsters launch party at Mrs. Dalloway’s in Berkeley! 7:30 pm

If you’re near any of these bookstores, I hope to see you!

  1. Congrats on all the wonderful events to come (there are rabbit shows?? Whoa!), the fabulous starred reviews for Delicate Monsters (*tosses confetti* *anxiously waiting to read it*), and the well-deserved Kentucky Bluegrass Award nomination for Complicit (if I weren’t too old to vote, I’d vote for it. I will certainly keep highly recommending it in the library, though!) And to that, here’s hoping you’ll pop by KY (Lexington! Yeah!) for an event sometime ;-)

    1. Thank you, Lori! And yes, there are rabbit shows! One of our kids does 4H and we go to some of the local shows with our pet bunny. Oh, and I hope to get to Kentucky one of these days (I’ve never been). It would be great to meet you!

  2. I was also in 4H growing up, but it was the equestrian club. I had no idea they also did shows for bunnies ;-) I hope you’ll get to make it over to KY someday, too. You’d really enjoy it (especially if you like horses. We have no shortage of them around here!) And it’d be fabulous to meet you, too! :-)

  3. Hi!
I’m such a huge fan. I love psychological thrillers so much. I read Complicit and made everybody else read it at my school. It makes me feel like I was part of the reason that it was nominated for the KY Bluegrass Award (although I know I’m far from being the reason that it was). I’m not at all surprised that it was on the list of nominated books. I’ll definitely be casting my vote for Complicit :)
I’m reading Charm & Strange right now and I’m beyond excited to read Delicate Monsters when it finally comes out. *Makes grabby hands* One day, I’ll have money to buy all of your books and I definitely will.

    1. Oh, thank you so much, Kelly! I am so happy to know you enjoyed Complicit and having the book nominated by readers means so very much to me. I really appreciate your kind words. Thank you and happy reading! -Steph
